Quick Paths To A New Career

With the right education, a new career could be closer than you think…

f you want to build your skills and boost your career, these five options can help.

#1: Medical Assisting Certificate

If you want to get into the medical field, consider earning a medical assisting certificate. Many programs can be completed in about one year.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a certificate can help distinguish an experienced or formally trained assistant from an entry-level one, which could potentially lead to higher income or greater employment opportunities.

Potential career path: Medical assistant
  • Typical medical assistant responsibilities: Medical assistants often help with the day-to-day administrative and clinical tasks in a doctor's office. This includes scheduling appointments, taking patients' medical histories, and helping with daily tasks to keep the office running smoothly.
  • Average earning potential: Medical assistants have an average annual income of $29,760. Top earners average at $40,190.

four money warning signs

First Person: Am I Headed for Financial Ruin?

Buying groceries on credit
If you don't have enough money in your checking account to purchase food and have to use credit, then you are in financial trouble. If you just use a credit card because it's convenient, and then pay it off, that's a different situation. I knew I had trouble when I used credit cards for pizza delivery instead of being able to pull out a $20. To avoid bankruptcy, start working on a cash-only basis for a while. Make a special envelope for food money. Clip coupons as well, or share extreme couponing tips with friends.
Making less income than housing expenses
If you don't have enough income coming in to pay your rent or mortgage and utilities, consider that a sign of financial desperation. Find other ways to make extra income. Mow lawns for neighbors if you have to. Consider renting a less expensive apartment. If you own a home, refinance or opt for a short sale so that you can downsize to a more affordable living situation. Otherwise, you will face foreclosure.
Not being able to pay credit card minimum
When your minimum payment becomes so high that you can't afford to pay it, you need to consider your options. Credit cards are unsecured debt, which means some people have no problem walking away from the bills. It's better to take responsibility and pay off your credit cards with the debt snowball plan. To avoid bankruptcy, you need to find a way to pay the minimum payments, or call the credit card companies to work out a temporary solution.
Being overdrawn on your checking account
Some banks will allow you to be overdrawn on your checking account up to a certain amount. But being overdrawn is always a red flag that you are not living within your means. Make a commitment to have at least $500 in your checking account as a cushion. Start making sacrifices each day to save money. It's fine to think about your monthly bills and budget, but I had to start looking at my finances daily to really reach my final, debt-free destination.
To avoid bankruptcy and prevent foreclosure on your home, make financial sacrifices early and often. Don't wait until you see the signs of financial desperation. I have a friend who is renting out a room to ease her financial burdens. A relative is renting out his Florida winter home. There's no shame in becoming a multigenerational household to save money on living expenses. It’s easier to navigate around financial potholes than to get out once you’re stuck.

College-educated immigrants outnumber unskilled immigrants

A new Brookings report finds that college-educated immigrants now outnumber those who enter the United States with just a high school degree. The disparity is especially striking in urban areas, with college-educated immigrants outnumbering their high-school-educated counterparts by 25 percent in 44 major U.S. cities. Overall, 30 percent of working-age immigrants have a college degree now, compared to just 19 percent in 1980. Only 28 percent of immigrants in the United States lack a high school diploma.

Carriers Sweat as Texting Cools Off

New messaging apps from Apple, others may hit fees.
Growth in the volume of text messaging is slowing sharply, just as new threats emerge to that lucrative source of wireless carrier profits.
While U.S. cellphone users sent and received more than 1 trillion texts in the second half of 2010, according to CTIA, a wireless industry trade group, that was just an 8.7% increase from the prior six months. It was the slimmest gain since texting exploded last decade.
Text traffic will come under more pressure in the months ahead. This week, Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL - News) showed off an application that will allow iPhone and iPad owners to bypass carriers and send text messages over the Internet to other people with Apple devices.
Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG - News), whose Android software is the most popular operating system on smartphones, has also recently worked on a messaging application, a person familiar with the matter said.
The new messaging tools -- answers to Research In Motion Ltd.'s (Nasdaq: RIMM - News) popular BlackBerry Messenger -- are a growing threat to a texting business that generated $25 billion in revenue in the U.S. and Canada last year.

The Pew Research Center recently found that 40 percent of Americans think marriage is becoming obsolete. Another recent Pew study found that Millennials (people age 18 to 29) say they think that being a good parent is way more important than having a good marriage.

12 Most Beautiful Lakes in the World

These 12 lakes go to all the right extremes—highest, deepest, clearest—and showcase nature at its most spectacular. Soak up the views from a boat, a cable car, a trailhead, or a castle tower.

Malawi

Lake Malawi

Home to 1,000 species of fish—estimated to be more than anyplace on earth—Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa) is Africa's third largest lake at 363 miles long and up to about 50 miles wide in spots. Located in a depression 2,300 feet below sea level, it's positioned at the crossroads of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and supports hundreds of local villages with its rich underwater stock (which is, unfortunately, gradually being depleted due to over-fishing). The lake's southern portion—as well as a bordering nub of wildlife-rich land, Cape Maclear—represents the world's first freshwater national park; it was also named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. A star of the waters here is the mbuna, a native freshwater fish known for eating directly from people's hands. Bring your snorkel gear—as beautiful as the scenery is, the best part about Lake Malawi is what's swimming beneath you in the crystal clear water.
Nearby: Cape Maclear, located within Lake Malawi National Park, is a perfect base for exploring the area.

Alberta, Canada

Peyto Lake

Alberta's Lake Louise is the famous one, on all the postcards and posters. But Louise's sister lake 29 miles north along Icefields Parkway, a two-laner that winds 142 miles through the Canadian Rockies, is even more picturesque. Thanks to glacial rock flour that flows in when the ice and snow melt every summer, the waters of Banff National Park's Peyto Lake are a brilliant turquoise more often associated with warm-weather paradises like Antigua and Bora-Bora. For the most dramatic views of the 1.7-mile-long stunner, encircled with dense forest and craggy mountain peaks, pull into the lot at Bow Summit, the parkway's highest point, and follow the steep hike to the overlook.
Nearby: The town of Banff, the heart of the park, is 62 miles south of Peyto Lake.
